A Wild New Direction For Me!

Post  Jazzooo on Mon Apr 06, 2009 12:30 am

EDIT Skip down to most recent link in the thread--it's the best. EDIT

eThis are the first few sections (13 minutes now!) of music for a 28 slideshow I'm scoring of a terrific artist, Juan Ezcurdia. (I'd love for you to check his site out, but some PC friends told me they were warned of a virus when visiting).

My new DM3200 doesn't have FW yet, so I couldn't record any audio yet--this is all Omni and Logic.

It changes quite a bit from section to section, if you can just trip out with it. I'm kind of in love with it right now. Smile

What piano sound did you use in the beginning of this?

You guys have no idea how gratifying it is to get good feedback for something that is so unusual, at least for me. Thanks.

It's Playmeforeva, the piano sound. And the DM3200 needs a FW card, which I've ordered but hasn't arrived yet. I can still sequence over USB though.

Driving around and listening to this, I've been composing the next movement and planning some minor adjustments to this first part. I'll keep you posted--man, I hope the artist likes it but if not, I might just keep on going!

Again, thanks. I'm sure it won't be everyone's cup o' tea.

Thanks for posting this. Listening right now. I like the long-form pieces a lot; I think I just enjoy following the changing audible landscape. Yours took me to some interesting places. Looking forward to your next installment.

What was the opening horn sound?

Thanks, Dan--it was Call of the Ancients, a really interesting sound that leaps up a fourth and goes slightly out of tune. I like playing sounds like that and trying to defeat their programming, so sometimes I held down a note very lightly and played others so it wouldn't do the jump. Also, figuring out the right chords to use in a progression that utilizes the jumps is a mind-bender, but I played all that in real time just to see if I could!

Bump for the new movement, born an hour ago. It's flowing right now.

WHOA. And here is Movement #1, only 2.5 minutes long--will segue into the movement you've already heard, starting with those trumpets:

Sounding like my best work right now, but I've been working on it all day so what do I know?

I think this is worth updating--here is the newest, best version of all three movements, and I'm hot on the trail of the fourth--an odd swinging jazz piece with upright bass, snare/brushes and steel drum. Smile

I can't stop composing! here is the new movement--actually, TWO new movements because I cheated and included something I improvised and posted here two months ago when I first got Omni as the 6th movement.

it starts at the tail end of the 2nd movement, then we get into backwards piano and a whole lot of really different fun stuff--check out the weird swing thing.

http://www.speedyshare.com/391175799.html

By the way, the movement where the steel drums take the lead, there will be an acoustic guitar solo by my friend and uber-guitarist ken Basman, but he doesn't know it yet.

Hope someone is digging this--it's the most fun I've had in a long time.

By the way, here are some of Juan Ezcurdia's images, badly scanned by moi:

I love his work--and by the way, he typically works in really large formats, like 6' x 6' canvas at least. Perfect to hide a bunch of Owens Corning 703 panels! Smile[/color]

Still rolling along--here is the newest movement, semi-classical I suppose. Cute, kind of like a Jack in Box commercial. Lots o' pizzicato.

You'll hear the last couple of measures of the preceding movement, then this one starts. It's only 3 minutes long.

The artist comes tomorrow to hear all this music for the first time.

Just took the artist through it--he wore headphones while his friend and I listened in the room as we all watched the slideshow. At one point, he said very quietly "I am about to cry." He told me that I have raised the bar for him and he must become a better painter! We discussed the really busy and aggressive second movement and decided we'd step up the pace of the slideshow itself for that movement--maybe 2.5 seconds per painting instead of the 4 or 5 right now, and then slow it back down when the music calms down.

I've got another 4 minutes to score, though I'll probably just bring back the original theme. I've also got to add two women's voices, doubling the synth choir, add a guitar solo and a scat solo by my friend Bobby Kaplan, the Mose Alison of Mexico. Then we sync it all to picture on Friday. I can't imagine it will go smoothly on a technical level--I've never worked with his computer guy and he speaks no English. But when it is all done, I'll upload the final product and let you know.

This has been the most creative week of my life, that I can remember.

Ok, here it is--the biggest, the best, the most complete mix so far--only lacking a short guitar solo, a short scat vocal solo and some women's voices over ambient sampled choral parts.

http://www.speedyshare.com/428402556.html

We had a gas loading the soundtrack over the DVD today, and the the video cat--who is a good editor--said "This music makes the pictures stand still--we need more movement!" So he's going to chop things up to fit the music a little.

Thanks, Hans! I love it, 'epic.' Smile Yes, we will definitely get it up on the 'net though I can't say when--the guy had it all cut until he heard the music and now he wants to re-do it. Again, thanks--I appreciate it.
