Agnus Dei - modern mass?

Post  Neil B on Mon Apr 13, 2009 2:36 am

I've had Omnisphere since it first came out but this is the first chance I've had to really use it in a track.

There's about 7 or 8 Omni tracks, 7 or 8 RMX, Trilogy, East West Choirs, Vocaloid Lola and a few other bits and pieces thrown in.

Should appeal to the Big Cahoona and Hans will probably recognise some variations on his RMX loops too.

Not what you'd expect for Omni use (??) but hey, it's Easter.

The story behind it is that I'm preaching a few back to back services in May and I wanted an uptempo themed piece of music, so I thought I'd do my own!

Needs a bit more work on the mix yet (or a lot) but it'll probably blast the old dears away at the back of the church Very Happy

I prefer the second half of the track, but I don't expect you guys to think much of it.
Feedback would be useful though

I like this, and think it's very well done. I prefer more harmonic movement than you're working with, but I still dug this. Why did you think we wouldn't like the second half? And did you get those samples to sing what you wanted them to?

Thanks for the feedback
I think I typed it poorly - I thought you wouldn't like any of it, but I prefer the second half.
I just felt it was a bit too different for an Omni site that specialises in the more ethereal elements of the synth.

In terms of harmonic movement, yes I agree, but to keep it in context, I'll be breaking off half way through a sermon to play this and the focal point is more the sermon than the song, so, really, I'm being a bit lazy with the music on this occasion.

with regards to the samples "singing":
The choirboys are singing Agnus Dei - which is in Omnisphere, as is the Gregorian "Amen" at the end. There are other Symphony of Voices vocal phrases now in Omni. I think it was Hans who did a great job slicing the "agnus Dei" phrase I used and using it in a track.

Other Omni choirs are the Oohs, Aahs and Greg "Ohs".
The female "Lamb of God" , which is the English for "Agnus Dei" is sung by Vocaloid Lola.
The remaining Choirs singing "Agnus Dei", "Have Mercy on us" "Miserere Nobis" and so on are the East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Choirs using Wordbuilder to create the words.
Did I get them to sing what I wanted them to do? Well, almost - I'm still finding my feet with EWQLSC and the words "take away" sound very poor if you listen closely.

Overall, it'll do the job that I've written it for. It'll wake them up more than the 17th Century version by Palestrina { www.tonaleffects.co.uk/agnusdei.mp3 } Laughing

Again, thanks for the feedback

Interesting, Neil. Thanks for the explanation. I have a friend who is using a similar approach with sampled choirs, and it's coming out pretty good.

Does this site really specialize in one type of Omni sound? Not if you and I have anything to with it. Wink

Yep, I suppose I agree with you there.
I downloaded your "new direction" a few days ago but have to admit I've been to busy to give it more than a quick scan through. I'll have a proper listen as soon as I can.

I do think my tastes are changing though - I'm an out and out Tangerine Dream fan and many other Berlin School/ Ambient/Space artists too, but just lately I feel I'm becoming more middle of the road.

So, I'll have to put my "old head" on and concentrate on your tracks a bit more closely.

Again, thanks for the feedback (final mix due soon)

Well, if it's any inspiration--I can guarantee my new thing is not middle of the road! Smile
